About Possible Future Case#UTokyo-IIS
The Possible Future Case#UTokyo-IIS website is a web magazine issued by the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) at the University of Tokyo. The IIS covers nearly all fields of engineering, ranging from the microscopic world at the quantum level to the global and cosmic level, to conduct research that will creating the lifestyles of tomorrow. The slogan at IIS is “Institute for a Possible Future”. This web magazine introduces the various “possible futures” originating from this “Institute for a Possible Future”.
A “Possible Future” is not something that can be created by IIS alone. “I have a desire to support that vision of the future,” “This type of technology or framework could create a more ideal future,” “There is a need to resolve this type of problem”. As we work towards forming a framework, IIS seeks to embrace various voices in society, knowledge from differing domains, and even incorporate objecting opinions and coincidences. Can you find a “possible future” you’d like to pursue? We look forward to receiving your comments.
Introduction of article categories
Articles are largely divided into seven categories based on the type of vision introduced in the article: Foundation for the Future, Health and Biotechnology, IT and Machinery, Materials and Manufacturing, Environment and Energy, Urban Development, and Technology and Well-being. Select the category that interests you to view the numerous relevant visions for the future.
Foundation for the Future
Introduces research forming the foundation of engineering and science, such as evaluating and modeling the properties of solids and liquids at the atomic level.
Health and Biotechnology
Introduces research related to health, such as the testing and treatment of infectious diseases, and research into understanding the physical and mental condition of a person without putting stress on the body.
IT and Machinery
Introduces research in the fields of control, devices, information and communications for realizing a future information society, including high-speed robot control, digital twins, and wireless communication networks.
Materials and Manufacturing
Introduces research on the development of substances and materials targeting organic and inorganic compounds and metals, such as the development of soft electronics and multifunction nanomaterials.
Environment and Energy
Introduces research aimed at creating a sustainable society, such as system development to balance power supply and demand, and mathematical optimization modeling for a low-carbon society.
Urban Development
Introduces lifestyle research pursing safety, convenience, comfort, and sustainability, such as technology for automating infrastructure maintenance management and proposals for self-assembled housing.
Technology and Well-being
What role does engineering play in achieving individual well-being in a society where both technology and how we define wealth are diversifying? This category introduces multifaceted research in areas such as engineering, natural environment, society, economy, and cultural perspectives.
