Non-destructive inspection for underwater structures
This section introduces what graduate students at UTokyo-IIS think and feel through their daily research activities, extracurricular activities, and daily life.
I joined Okabe Yoji Lab. and Institute of Industrial Science(UTokyo-IIS) as a master student of Department of System Innovation since April 2022. Okabe Yoji Lab. conducts research on state-of-the-art non-destructive structural health monitoring using ultrasonic waves. For example, we use laser to generate ultrasonic waves without direct contact to the test pieces and apply optical fiber sensor for damage inspection under extreme environments. In my research, I aim to investigate a new method for underwater structural integrity inspection using laser ultrasonic wave and optical fiber sensor. Currently, ocean structures such as oil rigs require manual inspection by diver, which is costly and must be conducted on a regular basis. I hope that in the future, my research can contribute to a novel technique for underwater structure and reduce the time and cost required for inspection and maintenance.
UTokyo-IIS is an ideal place to focus on research. It is surrounded by quiet neighborhood yet a dynamic environment. In UTokyo-IIS, there are many chances to meet people coming from different laboratories and learn about new research ideas. The campus covered with trees provided a picturesque scene in autumn and spring. I hope everyone will enjoy the atmosphere here.
